The aim of this article is to review key issues connected with the structural aspects of the financial system and the resulting financial system models. The structure of the article derives directly from this aim and reflects its review character. First, the structure of the financial system and its elements are discussed. Next, these theoretical issues are verified by the comparative analysis of the financial system structure in developed countries. The second part of the article is devoted to the presentation of the main financial system models in the context of its structural and functional characteristics.
