The article opens up a series of studies devoted to the financial system and its contemporary evolution. The aim of the articles is to review and systematize the most important issues connected with the financial system. The structure of the articles derives directly from their reviewing character. The first article is devoted to the analysis of different approaches to defining the financial system and its functions. The second article discusses the controversial issues concerning the financial system structure and the main financial system models. The third article analyses the main factors of the contemporary financial system evolution and quantitative and qualitative consequences of this process.
