Obstacles in Development of Direct Debit in Poland

Although direct debit has been known as the modern payment form for almost 9 years in Poland, it has not become a payment instrument widely used in our country up till now. The aim of this article is to identify barriers in the popularization of this payment service in Poland and to try to foresee its development. The paper depicts the history of direct debit introduction and development in Poland while EU countries' data provide the background. There is additional focus on the differences concerning the principles of the functioning of this service between Poland and some EU countries. The article was developed on the basis of publications devoted to direct debit development in Poland and issued by the Polish Bank Association [Związek Banków Polskich], The National Bank of Poland [Narodowy Bank Polski] and the National Clearing House [Krajowa Izba Rozliczeniowa] as well as annual reports by the European Central Bank concerning the development of this service in all EU member countries
