Loan Repaid in Fixed Instalments

The paper resumes the considerations presented in the article entitled Loan Repaid in Fixed Principal Instalments presented in the September issue of Bank i Kredyt. This time the author considers a loan with a fixed amount repayment stream. He arrives at a similar conclusion - the fact that the repayment happens in equal instalments favours the customer. The bank in turn can increase its interest income by, for example, reducing the number of instalments. The author proves that the total amount of interest paid, which is a function of the product of interest rate on the loan and its term is always greater for a loan repaid in fixed instalments than for a loan where the fixed instalments refer to principal only. In the former case, it is possible to estimate the amount of interest paid with an approximated (asymptotic) equation which the author derives. The equation holds for high interest rates or long maturity.
