Adam Kalinowski
Perspective of euro manufacturing in Poland

Coins understood as a product, in contrast to the material form of money, represent, obviously, a decadent one. However, an enormous amount of slot machines, low circulation cost, easy handling by the handicapped, and the pressure of the retail trade, and charity and religious organizations will prolong functioning of material money, in particular, coins, for at least several years.

Euro, similarly to the dollar, has its graphic symbol, i.e. double-crossed letter "epsilon". Two parallel horizontal lines are to symbolize stability of the new currency. Each coin will have a common European reverse and a national obverse. The reverse, designed by the designer of the Royal Belgian Mint, Mr. Luc Luycx, presents 15 EU member states, which on 1-, 2- and 5-cent coins show the picture of a new emerging Europe at the background of the map of the world. On 10-, 20- and 50-cent coins all member states are drawn at some distance from one another, and on bigger denominations, 1 and 2 euro, they come together as one common European Union. The designer has not forgot the blind. Denomination is engraved in relief. Different combinations of lines in relief make it possible for the blind to distinguish the coins.

Each EMU state has a right to issue a specified amount of coins with its own obverse, being legal tender on the territory of the whole monetary union.

When Poland becomes the European Union member with full rights, and approaches accession in the Economic and Monetary Union, many political, legislation and economic processes will speed up. Rich experience of the European states may be used. However, before decision on the issuance of Polish euro coins, two extremely important for Poland events must occur:
  • Poland's admission to the European Union;
  • Poland's admission to the Economic and Monetary Union.
The analysis of macroeconomic, logistic and technical conditions necessary for the issuance of the Polish euro coins shows that it would depend exclusively on common actions. The success of EMU and euro in the European Union will decide on a potential acceleration of Poland's integration processes with the Communities.
