The stability of the financial system primarily draws upon the operations of its particular elements among which systemically important banks play a fundamental role. The article presents the criteria, which may be considered while assessing the importance of a bank in the system and shows benefits and threats related to the existence of such institutions. Activities aimed at increasing the competitiveness and equal opportunities for banks illustrate the thesis.
